Buy or Rent? Killzone 2 on the PS3

Killzone 2 is a FPS video game for the Playstation 3 entertainment system. It is an “exclusive” title for the PS3 which gives fan boys a reason to cheer and boast when confronted by owners solely playing games on the X-Box 360 or Wii video game systems. However, has the long awaited Killzone 2 lived up to the hype? Does it deserve the cheers? Will you look like a fool boasting? Well, actually that last one is pretty much a given, but what of this Killzone 2 video game?

Killzone 2 picks up after the invasion of the first game. If you did not play that one then the invasion of which I speak is the one where the Helghan army left their planet to so rudely come warring on ours. In Killzone 2 we have decided to take the fight to them on their turf, only to discover it’s not going to be an easy fight. The war in Killzone 2 is more or less lifted from the quagmire that became the Iraq war.

The graphics for Killzone 2 look fantastic.

The single player campaign for Killzone 2 is fun. The environments become a bit redundant and you do a lot of elevator riding while taking in the more amazing sights, but it is indeed fun. If you are a very experienced FPS game player then do not waste your time with the lower experience settings for game difficulty. The AI in this game is rather challenging unless you pick the lower two settings, on those settings you can run around with just a knife a lot of the time hacking up the moron baddies.

The online play is where the game got dull for me. The levels available for playing are naturally taken from the game in their design, but it all just looks the same still. After beating the story and going online I was not inspired to keep playing. There are other online based PS3 games that give me more enjoyment and less of the issues that did not sit well with me for Killzone 2. Yes, I think this game is worth playing because when you check or view your stats here, you’ll see good results. But I am about to start listing complaints.

Actually, my main and almost only complaint is: the controls. Forget the way the screen freezes during loading moments here and there throughout, that did not bother me. What bothered me was how slow and blocky the character felt. You lumber through the levels with what feels almost like lag, and every movement seems to have a slower reaction on screen than when you blazingly smashed the button with your finger. If walking is too slow for you, indeed you can sprint, but when you sprint it is almost like a guy running down hill out of control. You cannot turn very well or look to the side after sprinting or during. It felt less like I was a soldier and more like a big, clunky robot. Some people have complained heavily online about the button layout on Killzone 2 for controls, but that is not an issue since you can adjust them in the options and align them to be just like other games.

The story and acting in Killzone 2 are fairly lame, macho fueled moments of men with names like Sev and Rico cussing and posing and then trying not to cry when one of their own dies. Real over the top dramatics that come off fairly corny.

Killzone 2 is worth playing if you were a fan of the first one and want to see the story continue. It is even worth playing if you are not familiar with the previous installment. However, it is not the cutting edge grand experience that one may think. Resistance 2 was a better game to me in solo play and the Call Of Duty games beat Killzone 2 online in my opinion for fun.
